the wave at the front is like a ripple on an ocean wave - the tsunami wave is miles in length and takes many minutes to even reach a peak (20-35 min wavelength)
The cries of disbelief by the witnesses is heart-wrenching. Truly difficult to watch after all these years. I have infinite respect for the Japanese and their spirit.
I think this video, more than any other I have watched of this devastating tsunami, depicts the phenomenal height the water reaches. Most videos, whether CCTV or physical, don’t tend to be (filmed) at an angle that visually shows the true water depth, but this footage is so heartbreakingly accurate it highlights just why, and how, so many lives were lost. Thoughts and best wishes to everyone who lived through this and for your losses, be it human or property 🙏🏻
Oh dear God, this is still so sad and heartbreaking watching so many times even after 10 years today. That’s my home country and I live in Canada but always think of all those who were deeply & painfully affected. These young guys shouting must have been in total disbelief and utter shock watching their town getting destroyed by enormous & powerful Tsunami waves. I hope their families were ok. 🙏🏽✨😰😢💔

Truly horrifying. The wave must have been 20-30ft tall. Those trees submerged by a wall of water! Nice job capturing what must have been the most fearful moment of your life.

The sound of horror and helplessness became louder as that devastating wall of ocean kept going further inland. I still shudder in fear even from so far away in Australia.
Before 311, this recording much resembles the way beyond-shore tsunamis were drawn in manga...that sudden, spread out, frothily turbulent onslaught approach of theirs
That must be tough, watching little communities getting totally demolished by these waves, knowing that people will die and there’s nothing you can do about it. The helplessness must be unbearable. It’s almost like someone falling through the ice and you know if you try to save them, you will die too.

@Indrid_Cold The other response is in error? Or we’re talking different parts of coast. The government warned of max 30 ft wave. Most sea walls were built that high, not all. They ranged from 3 ft at Chiba(? I think that’s it’s name) to 75ft hitting large city and monster wave at 134 ft. Some sea walls were obliterated. I don’t think that last small town was rebuilt. Businesses, fishing yes. Emergency response say that 6 inches of flood water will knock you off your feet. One foot will lift your car off pavement. The ones that change from a trickle to raging 30+- ft “river” that’s still rising and unbelievably violent waves in less than 15 seconds.
Wow. What a view. The property in the middle there only had the sound of incoming water to earn them. And not much time IF they even heard it at all. When the water reached them,, there is nothing to do. Nothing can be done but MAYBE get lucky,,, somehow !?!?
At the beginning the boys thought it was going to be very cool but then as it hit the shore line the horror of it all resonated in their sorrowful cries.
Japan must regret building so much, including a nuclear power plant, on a Tsunami prone coastline to begin with. That part of the pacific is prone to quakes and Tsunamis, they happen there a lot.
@@carrisasteveinnes1596 It will, and we need to be ready next time. Better earthquake and tsunami warning systems have already been installed in many Pacific costal areas, and better sea defenses built. What we need is some kind of automatic sea wall tsunami defence system that is triggered to react in the event of a quake, higher than the last tsunami waves were, in really risky areas, that can hide below the sea until it is needed, and be raised in time for the waves to protect cities and nuclear facilities etc. I am sure such a feat of engineering will be possible in the years to come. Technology will go on to save many lives, but we will always be vulnerable in the face of nature. That will never change, and it shouldn't, we should be humbled by nature, and do our best to live alongside the forces of the planet we are so often subjected to. The reason we build nuclear plants near the sea is because seawater is vital for cooling the reactors. Tokyo relied on Fukushima for it's massive energy needs, so building the plant elsewhere would not have been possible really. So we have to find a way to stop another Fukushima too.
Also, if you're anywhere in the world and there is a tsunami warning, if you think you are safe on your chosen higher ground, move higher. You have no idea how tall the waves will be, so get up as high as you possibly can. As high as you can possibly, physically get above the water level, a mountain or large hill is a good bet if you can get to one. Try to get to safe land, but any very tall, very well built brick structure will do if you have to.
